(Sperling) Three mana is already very reasonable for a useful planeswalker. Abilities like, “draw a card” and, “both players discard a card” don’t excite us on a one-mana spell, but as abilities on a three-mana planeswalker, we should get excited. Jace Beleren and Liliana of the Veil are better than they seem at first glance, strictly because they cost three.
The fact that one of the three mana in the cost is a green mana is very important. Whether it’sAvacyn’s Pilgrim, Arbor Elf, Deathrite Shaman, or some no-longer-Standard-legal classic likeBirds of Paradise, green always has a critter or two waiting to clock in on turn 1 and get you to three mana on turn 2.
